Big Business or Small - You Can be Green

Large businesses like Apple and Google have offset their annual energy use by investing in renewable energy production in locations where the environment and other factors makes the most sense.  Google has been carbon neutral for over a decade and in 2017 purchased enough renewable energy to match 100 percent of their global consumption for operations.  These large companies with business offices, data centers, and customer service centers simply cannot install enough renewable resources on their properties to sustain the operations.  These companies “offset” or match their electricity use by purchasing renewable energy certificates produced in other areas.

All electricity consumers have the option to purchase renewable energy certificates without having to install renewable generation equipment.

Electric energy is unique because it is the only energy consumers use that is produced at the same time it is used in our homes and businesses.  At any point in time, electricity is produced by coal, natural gas, and oil-fired generators as well as renewable resources such as hydro, solar, and wind generators.  For this reason, your electric utility cannot tell which type of generator produced the energy you use.  However, in order to promote the development and expanded use of renewable energy, renewable resources track their energy production through renewable energy certificates (REC).  Then, whoever purchases REC owns the renewable energy that was produced by the renewable resource.
